Emanuele Bottazzi graduated in Philosophy at the University of Ferrara in 2003 (magna cum laude) under the supervision of Claudio Masolo (ISTC-CNR). From 2004 to 2008, he had a research position at the Institute for Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of National Research Council, he also collaborated with the Ontology Lab of the University of Turin. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Torino (Italy) on the philosophical issues in social organizations. During 2008 he was visiting scholar at Columbia University, Philosophy department, under the supervision of professor Achille Varzi. He is generally interested in multidisciplinary research, trying to fill the gap between an analytical approach and a humanistic one in both philosophy and knowledge representation as a discipline of artificial intelligence. More specifically he has as its interests: Social Ontology, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Law andMetaphysics. He is now back at ISTC-CNR (Laboratory for Applied Ontology) with a postdoctoral research fellowship on the ontological aspects of organizations. In this field he is trying to build an account of social interaction based on the notions of failure and impasse.

Decreus, Thomas Publication on pdf (2010)
Thomas Decreus (Kortrijk, 1984) studied Modern History at the University of Leuven. He wrote a thesis on nation building after the Belgian Revolution, by focusing on early national histories. After this, he started studying philosophy and developed a particular interest in political philosophy. He wrote a bachelor paper on Benjamin, Agamben and Derrida and a master paper on Dworkin and Lefort. Since 2009 he has been a doctoral student for the Centre of Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy of the HIW (Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte, Leuven). His research concerns the relationship between representation, hegemony and democracy. He has a special interest in developing a conception of hegemony which is reconcilable with democratic premises. Following from this he has also developed a particular interest in the relationship between ethics, hegemony and democracy. The authors on which he focuses for the moment are Laclau, Mouffe, Lefort, Connolly and Gramsci.

Demin Duan is a PhD fellow at the Center for Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. His research interest revolves around political philosophy in general, nineteenth century liberalism, especially Alexis de Tocqueville's political thought, in particular. He is also interested in Chinese politics and related topics.

Lawrence Hamilton (PhD Cantab) is Professor of Politics at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, Affiliated Lecturer in Political Theory, Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) and Faculty of History, Cambridge University, UK, and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge, where he has been a Mellon Research Fellow and a Visiting Fellow. He is the author The Political Philosophy of Needs (Cambridge University Press 2003 [2007 – paperback edition]), and numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of topics in political philosophy, South African politics and the humanities. He currently holds the prestigious South African National Research Foundation’s President’s Award for research excellence (a five-year award of substantial research funding) and in 2009 he was elected Editor-in-Chief of Theoria: A Journal of Social and Political Theory.

Anatoliy Tolstoukhov is the President of Charity Organization “Center for Practical Philosophy“ (Kiev, Ukraine), he holds a D.Sc. degree in Philosophy (2004) and a Ph.D. in Philosophy (1999) (both Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev). His major field of interest is practical philosophy, particularly, philosophy of ecology, philosophy of politics, and philosophy of science. Anatoliy Tolstoukhov also works as a politician, having served several terms as a member of Ukraine’s Parliament and Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers. Currently he serves as a councilor to Ukraine’s Prime minister.
Iurii Mielkov is the Projects’ coordinator at Charity Organization “Center for Practical Philosophy” (Kiev, Ukraine), he holds a Ph.D. in philosophy (2003, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev). Iurii’s research is focused on such aspects of practical philosophy as philosophical problems of contemporary science, philosophy of nature, and philosophy of democracy.

Antoinette Scherz studied philosophy, social psychology and international law at the University of Zurich and Geneva. She wrote her Master’s thesis in political philosophy on "The function of human rights in development cooperation". She currently works in the Swiss National Science Foundation project: Designing “demoicracy” in Europe. In her PhD thesisshe focuses on the theory of multilateral democracy and the contribution of normative theory to institutional design. This will include a conceptual and normative analysis of democracy beyond the nation state as well as a discussion of the concept of the people and suggestions for a multilevel institutional system.

Femmy Thewissen is a doctoral student of the Research Group in Political Philosophy (RIPPLE) at the K.U.Leuven. She obtained a masters degree in Philosophy and Political Sciences at the K.U.Leuven. As an Erasmus student she studied during one semester at the Université Paris X. She is currently working on a PhD thesis on political representation and governance. The central questions of her research are, firstly, “where does democratic political representation consist in?” and, secondly, “is the concept of political representation stemming from the context of the nation-state still applicable in the contemporary context of transnational institutions?” Related to this last question she has a particular interest in the growing tendency towards independence of expert-networks and how they relate to representative claims coming from civil society.
